Ukraine's Lobortas & Karpova jewelery house displayed a gold ring with 837 African and Yakutian diamonds in Kiev, claiming it is a new world record. The ring, owned by an unidentified Ukrainian businesswoman, is called "The Dance of an Angel". Its value has not been revealed, but similar rings from the collection fetched more than $50,000. From JCK News - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a voluntary recall of "Children’s Mood Necklaces and Diva Necklaces." Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed, CPSC said in a statement. The recalled jewelry contains high levels of lead, CPSC said. On January 1, 2007 the European Union will assume chairmanship of the Kimberley Process. The body has vowed to strengthen the process and deal actively with any crisis which could compromise its effectiveness. Participating KPCS governments now monitor and certify all rough diamonds in their territory before export and forbid any rough diamonds from entering their territory without an approved KPCS certificate. According to reports from the Ghana news agency, that country has inaugurated a Kimberley Process Certification Oversight Committee in an effort to ensure that conflict diamonds will not cross that nation’s borders. Five men, including one Belgian national, were arrested in Zimbabwe, charged with possession of diamonds from the Marange district. That country recently opened up the Marange diamond mine to all residents. Finders of diamonds are supposed to sell discovered rough to the state according to regulations, but the open market may pay more than the state is willing to.
