The American Gem Society Laboratories (AGS) has appointed Joe Van Ells as director of gemological services. The United Nations World Food Program, in conjunction with Warner Bros. will present free screenings of the movie Blood Diamond in Freetown, Sierra Leone on May 8 and 9, 2007.   The movie, directed by Edward Zwick, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly, centered on the illicit diamond trade which fueled the 1990s civil war in that country. Liberia has been admitted to the Kimberley Process following an assessment mission led by the European Commission, along with representatives from Botswana, industry and civil society. This development, along with the UN Security Council’s decision to lift the diamond embargo on Liberia on April 27, means Liberia will now be able to export its rough diamonds legally to other Kimberley Process countries.
