The United Nations World Food Program, in conjunction with Warner Bros. will present free screenings of the movie Blood Diamond in Freetown, Sierra Leone on May 8 and 9, 2007.
The movie, directed by Edward Zwick, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou and Jennifer Connelly, centered on the illicit diamond trade which fueled the 1990s civil war in that country. "It is wonderful to have the chance to make this story available to the people of Sierra Leone," Zwick said in comments to the media. "After all, it is a story that belongs to them."
The World Food Program (WFP) is providing food assistance to 300,000 people in Sierra Leone in efforts to help the country rebuild after the devastating civil war.
