The famous “Golden Nugget Collection,” which has been on display for almost three decades at the landmark Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV, will be offered at auction on December 3 in Los Angeles CA.
The collection, also known as the gold nuggets of businessman Arthur J. Sexauer, includes 32 pieces selected for their beauty and folklore in his home of Fairbanks, Alaska.
Gold nuggets are valued as gemstones rather than gold due to their rarity. According to specialists less than two percent of mined gold is found in nugget form.
Famous pieces in the collection include the 21.61 oz “Parrot Head,” the 12.07 oz “Eagle’s Head,” a fifteen-nugget watch chain and the 6.5 oz “Worry Stone.” Renowned Las Vegas businessman Stephen Wynn invited Sexauer to display the collection at the Golden Nugget behind bulletproof glass in 1979. It was removed in August as the property undergoes renovation and expansion.
The auction house of Bonhams & Butterfields will be offering the collection as a single lot as part of their Natural History sale on December 3. Pre-sale estimates are available upon request.
