DIY weddings are all the rage these days, with brides making everything from the invitations to the party favors themselves. But when it comes to flowers, most couples are still afraid to go it alone, choosing to spend thousands of dollars on professional flowers for the centerpieces, bouquet and boutonnieres. While professional flowers are usually reliably beautiful and certainly take some of the stress off the bride on the wedding day, making your own floral centerpieces and bouquets is surprisingly easy and can save you thousands of dollars. Plus, when you go DIY on the flowers, you get to choose every detail, from the flowers themselves to the binding on the bouquets.

Although you may have your heart set on a dramatically cascading bouquet of lilies, if you are planning to make your own wedding bouquet, you may want to stick with a simple style. The easiest bouquet to do yourself is the classic dome style, in which about 20-50 of the same flower type are grouped together closely in a relatively stiff dome shape, and bound in a ribbon or another firm binding. You can find simple instructions for making the dome style bouquet online. To make this simple style more unique and personalized, choose a unique flower, or a bright, offbeat color of your favorite rose or tulip. Cap off the bouquet with a sleek, modern binding like a satin ribbon in the color of your dress or a bright contrasting hue.

Making your own floral centerpieces is not as hard you may think either. Once you choose a simple glass vase, the sky is the limit in terms of choosing how to embellish and fill it. You might decide to wrap a simple satin ribbon (or twine, for that rustic-elegant look) around the vase, and then fill it with a simple, loose mix of wildflowers. Or you can purchase inexpensive faux orchids that are set with tiny light bulbs and hide the battery pack in gravel inside the vase. Once the lights in the wedding hall are dimmed, the small twinkling lights will make the whole room glow! Combine the romantic glow of candles with the classic beauty of roses in bud vases for an affordable and beautiful look, or opt for a seasonal mix of branches, flowers, and even fruit. Bear in mind, that if you have no flower-arranging experience, trimming and arranging the blooms may take longer than you expect, and cannot be done too far in advance. You may want to enlist the help of a few friends to pitch in the day before the wedding to make sure everything goes smoothly. Among wedding DIY projects, there is no question that making your own wedding flowers is one of the most time-consuming and intimidating projects you can take on. But creating your own bouquet and centerpieces can be fun and rewarding, and can save you thousands of dollars. It’s worth a trial run to see if it’s something you would want to do!
