What Are 'Asscher' Cut Diamonds?

The ‘Asscher’ is a stepped square cut with cropped corners meant to draw the eye into the center of the diamond. An 'Asscher' diamond is cut in the same manner as an emerald cut, and is very similar but square-shaped. With their eight sides, Asscher cut diamonds create a pattern of repeated shapes within the diamond itself for an exquisite cut.

Technically, proper use of the term 'Asscher' is associated with Royal Asscher diamonds, a brand of cut cornered square step cuts produced by the Asscher family. The nickname ‘Asscher’ has entered the trade lexicon as a description for common square emerald cuts, but we would be remiss if we did not acknowledge the origins of this nickname.
