While some jewelry pieces—the pearl necklace, the wedding band, and the diamond stud earrings, to name a few—will be around forever, there are always times when a well-dressed woman needs a more trendy piece of jewelry. Fashion designer’s jewelry, especially jewelry pieces from fashion houses known for haute couture and trend-setting ready-to-wear collections, can suit this need perfectly. These jewelry trends work with existing fashions trends in clothing, shoes, and accessories to help every woman come up with a look that suits her needs and style and is still current and relevant.
This season, several fashion designer’s jewelry collections has received raves for innovation, creativity, and wearability. These pieces, by the likes of Oscar de la Renta, Fendi, and Coach, have of course inspired fast-fashion versions at every price point, so that even the casual viewer watching from home can look like a red-carpet celebrity decked out in millions of dollars of borrowed jewels.
1. Despite its name, the bib necklace, a collar-style necklace fitting closely at the base of the neck—is elegant, classy and completely wearable. Bulgari’s majestic bib necklace, set with pink sapphires, emeralds, and dramatically oversized topaz stones, can be seen modeled by Kirsten Dunst in the elite jewelry designer’s latest ad. Celebrities love the drama and beauty of the bib necklace—just check out photos of Frieda Pinto in an ethereal, woven, gold and diamond bib necklace by Chopard and Heidi Klum in a stylish silver-and-turqoise Lorraine Schwartz collar, both at the Golden Globes.
2. Unusual materials, like enamel, wood, leather, and even plastic, are turning up more and more in fashion designer’s jewelry. A more avant-garde alternative to faux-precious metals, high-tech jewelry-making tools have allowed designers to be more creative than ever with these simple materials. Eddie Borgo’s white and black plastic cuffs with laser-cut lace insets and Fendi’s resin bangles in bright primary colors are two eye-catching examples of this fun new jewelry trend.
3. The “more is more” approach has already been around for a few years, and now it looks like it is one of those jewelry trends that are here to stay. The look has moved up from high-end costume jewelry like J. Crew’s popular resin-and-metal necklaces to fashion designers’ jewelry collections and even fine jewelry houses as well. Paris-based jewelry designer Shourok received a shout-out in Harper’s Bazaar for his incredibly busy-yet-beautiful necklaces, while the pieces in the Tony Duquette for Coach line combine bright faux-cabochon-style gems with sunbursts and other heavenly motifs.
4. Ever since a glowing Natalie Portman wore a pair of Tffany and Co. tassel earrings to accept her Best Actress Oscar last year, the one-time hippie-chic look has become a bona-fide high-fashion trend. Portman’s earrings themselves, the Marrakesh Tassel Earring by Paloma Picasso for Tiffany and Co., sold out immediately after her appearance, but other celebrities have been seen since wearing versions of the look by many different designers. Oscar de la Renta’s take is bright and bold, featuring turquoise beading, while the Fendi version has a vintage-inspired look with silver-tone brass and resin.
5. Statement rings are bolder than ever, with designers of all kinds leaving behind the traditional, demure styles favored by engagement ring designers in favor of inventive, creative new shapes and silhouettes. Alexander McQueen has received raves for its twistedly whimsical skull rings, while Cartier’s diamond-accented gemstone rings in its Haute Joaillerie collection are just the thing to wear with a simple black dress.
6. Enamel, a glass coated surface that can be created in any color and finish, has long been a choice jewelry-making material in certain countries, but fashion designers are finally catching on to its statement-making potential. Bottega Veneta’s diamond-shaped drop earrings achieve covet-worthy status due to their bright-yellow enamel finish, while a textured candy-red enamel surface does the same to a Kara Ross pendant necklace. J. Crew carries a wide variety of affordable, but stylish, enameled bangles, cuff bracelets, and pendants, all finished in modern, colorful enamel.
