Diamonds are rare. The bigger and better they are, the rarer and more valuable they are. As size increases, price increases in a non-linear relationship. That is, a two carat diamond is more than twice the price of a one carat diamond.

At certain sizes along the size continuum diamond prices jump significantly creating a steep pricing curve. The three carat mark is a major point at which diamond rarity and value sharply increases. Several quality factors combine to determine specific prices on individual diamonds. They are known as the “Four C’s” – Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat. We have just talked about the relationship of carat weight to pricing.  Color and Clarity grades as determined by a gemological laboratory such as GIA-GTL (Gemological Institute of America- Gem Trade Laboratory) or AGSL (American Gem Society Laboratory) also have significant impact on value.

But the first C - “Cut”- is arguably the most important quality factor as it is a significant component of rarity and has the most impact on beauty.  Brilliance, fire and sparkle are created by skillful cutting and polishing of the diamond from rough to finished gem.
