 blood diamond movie

Non-Governmental Organizations Amnesty International and Global Witness, along with the movie “Blood Diamond” have launched a website at www.blooddiamondaction.org citing the history of conflict diamonds in Africa, information on present conditions and downloadable information.

The movie’s trailer and still photos are featured on the site, as well as buyers’ guides and sample letters to the US Government and World Diamond Council.  Overviews of the Kimberly Process and measures being taken to address the conflict diamond issue are given, with statistics that are significantly different than those provided by government and industry.

The buyers’ guide instructs consumers to ask the following questions of their jewelers:

  • How can I be sure none of your jewelry contains conflict diamonds?
  • Do you know where the diamonds you sell come from?
  • Can I see a copy of your company’s policy on conflict diamonds?
  • Can you show me a written guarantee from your diamond suppliers stating that your diamonds are conflict-free?

According to the site's designer, the site will be plugged on an upcoming episode of "Oprah."
