When you step out of the car that brings you to Colorado Springs, take a deep breath. What you are breathing is some of the most fresh, pure air in the United States. Purified by the Rocky Mountains and carried over to Colorado Springs on the gentle breeze, the air in this area has given rise to one of the most outdoorsy, athletic towns in the entire country. It seems only fitting that Colorado Springs, Colorado, is also home to the famed United States Air Force Academy. In the same town that the American military elite train and practice their most advanced maneuvers, thousands of tourists come to experience the outdoorsy adventures of Colorado Springs for themselves.
The best place to stay in all of Colorado Springs is the famous Broadmoor Hotel resort. Located at the foot of Cheyenne Mountain, the resort has everything from a world-class spa to first-rate skiing. From the Broadmoor, you will have easy access to many of the other attractions in the area, like the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo and North Cheyenne Canon City Park.
But the outdoor exploration doesn’t end at the hotel. Venture out to a few of Colorado Spring’s most beloved natural attractions, like the Garden of the Gods natural rock formations or Seven Falls Park. You can even get on the Barr Trail to hike to the top of Pike Peak, the beautiful mountain that was the inspiration for the song America the Beautiful. And if you still have energy, you can visit the Cave of the Winds, hike through the Pike National Forest, or go white water rafting on the Arkansas River.
After all that adventure, you are going to want to take a day off for more relaxing activities. Book a night’s stay at the Flying W Ranch for that authentic dude-ranch experience. The next day, indulge you inner American-history nerd and visit the Ghost Town Museum and the Western Museum of Mining. For more on the unique science and natural history of the area, visit the May Natural History Museum, and for a uniquely American Western experience, spend a few hours at the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame. You can even tour the United States Air Force Academy campus and the United States Olympic Training Center, both of which are located in Colorado Springs.
