Nestled in the Central Region of Singapore, the quiet and idyllic region of Toa Payoh attracts families, retirees, and tourists to its beautiful, tree-lined avenues and bustling community centers. Well-to-do businesspeople and their families live in the private estates of Upper Aljuried, while students and younger people congregate in the affordable apartment housing of the downtown area. Toa Payoh is also a notable center for some of the best and most pleasant shopping of the Central Region—Toa Payoh jewelry is said to be some of the highest quality and most affordable of any in Singapore.

When Toa Payoh was cleared of its slum and swamp origins and redeveloped in the late 1960’s, the town’s planners envisioned a tasteful suburban oasis centered on a pedestrian plaza. Toa Payoh was the first prototype of an urban planning model that would later become the norm throughout the region. Today, the Town Centre serves just such a role—connecting several residential neighborhoods with a commercial hub. In this hub is where many of Toa Payoh jewelers work—the center contains several notable Toa Payoh jewelry shops. An L-shaped outdoor mall, anchored by two department stores and lined with shops, eateries, plazas, a library, and a cinema, the town center serves as the commercial and community center of the town.
