Polish concerns the condition of each facet surface. Symmetry concerns the placement, alignment, and balance of the facet pattern. A deduction in either field calls for a different kind of review.
For a well-cut round brilliant, Excellent in both fields remains the preferred finish profile. When otherwise comparable diamonds require a tradeoff, Excellent symmetry with Very Good polish is often the more comfortable starting point, provided magnified inspection shows no material surface feature.

Polish and Symmetry Are Both Finish Grades
The progression from rough crystal to finished diamond depends on
diamond polishing. Polishing refines each facet surface, producing the smooth, reflective finish needed for facets to transmit and reflect light efficiently. Because
individual diamond facets have both surface condition and placement, those features are evaluated separately.
Diamond symmetry concerns geometry: whether facets meet accurately, the outline is balanced, and central features are correctly placed. Symmetry as graded on a laboratory report is referred to as “meet point” symmetry and may reflect an off-center culet, a wavy girdle, uneven crown facets, or a twist between crown and pavilion. GIA evaluates polish and symmetry separately. A round brilliant with Very Good polish or symmetry can still receive an Excellent overall cut grade when its light performance and proportions are Excellent. On
a GIA diamond report, the individual finish grades appear alongside the cut grade and the report's proportion information. A GIA Triple Ex has a grade of Excellent for polish, symmetry and overall cut. Today, GIA Triple Ex is the default standard for a well cut round diamond, and can impact value even if visually insignificant.

The Direct Answer: Which Grade Matters More?
Polish and symmetry are two parts of a larger cut-quality picture. The GIA cut system (round diamonds) considers brightness, fire, scintillation, weight ratio, durability, polish, and symmetry. Cut quality is based on both proportions and finish, so neither finish factor can stand in for an examination of the complete diamond.
A symmetry downgrade generally warrants earlier investigation. The grade may reflect the relationship of facets to one another, the centering of the table and culet, girdle regularity, and the balance of the outline.
