GIA Presents 2006 Volunteer Award

From GIA, Carlsbad, Calif. - The Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority in gems and gemology, will present its 2006 GIA Chapter Volunteer Award to U.S. Virgin Island Senator Shawn-Michael Malone in recognition of his work in establishing an alumni chapter in St. Thomas. The chapter works to establish the study of the science of gems and gemology on the island in recognition of the importance of jewelry to the tourism industry there. The presentation takes place at the “GIA Rocks Tucson” party, celebrating the GIA Alumni Association’s 25^th Anniversary while raising money for GIA’s Alumni Endowment Fund.

Proceeds from the GIA Rocks Tucson event benefit the GIA Alumni Endowment Fund, which is part of the larger GIA Endowment Campaign. Endowment monies are permanently invested, leaving the interest earned to be disbursed over time to support GIA Alumni Association needs such as continuing alumni education, student equipment loan programs, or other priorities.
