GIA Diamond Dossier vs Full Grading Report: What Is Missing?

A grading report is useful only when it can be tied to the diamond it describes. Report format affects how that match is made.
For loose natural diamonds in the D-to-Z color range, GIA offers both the GIA Diamond Dossier® and the full GIA Diamond Grading Report. Each records GIA’s assessment of the core 4Cs of diamond quality, but the two documents identify the diamond in different ways. A shopper who understands the available GIA diamond report formats can use either report as a technical baseline for evaluating a specific diamond.
A full GIA Diamond Grading Report includes a plotted clarity diagram, often called a stone plot, which helps to positively identify the diamond and to support the clarity grade.. The GIA Diamond Dossier®, which was designed for smaller stones and carries a lower cost, does not include a stone plot.
Instead, the Dossier requires a microscopic laser inscription of the GIA report number on the diamond’s girdle. GIA describes the Dossier as a 4Cs assessment with that report-number inscription for identification, while the full report includes the 4Cs, a plotted clarity diagram, and a proportions graphic. The formats offer different identification tools; a Dossier is a reliable document, but it does contain less information.

What Identifies a Diamond With a GIA Diamond Dossier?

On a GIA diamond dossier, the report-number inscription on the diamond’s girdle is the main identification feature. The characters can be read with magnification. They cannot be read with the unaided eye, and a hand-held loupe may not be enough for a novice. A microscope makes the number much easier to confirm. The inscription gives the report number a direct physical connection to the loose diamond. A shopper can compare the number on the girdle with the printed report and the number in GIA Report Check, rather than trying to locate and match microscopic inclusions. That can be particularly helpful with smaller diamonds, where features are difficult to find and interpret.
A laser inscription is useful. It is not a guarantee against misrepresentation. Compare the number with the diamond’s measurements, carat weight, color and clarity characteristics, and fluorescence. The inscription confirms an important data point; inspection of the individual diamond and a trusted seller’s handling controls still matter.

What the Full Report Adds: The Clarity Plot

A full GIA Diamond Grading Report includes a plotted clarity diagram. The symbols show the approximate type and location of clarity characteristics that support the grade and help identify the diamond. A clarity plot is an identification map, not a photographic record of every internal and external feature. It records significant characteristics and provides enough information to positively identify the diamond and support the clarity grade. Additional inclusions may not appear on the diagram.
When a full-report diamond has no added inscription, the plot enables a gemologist to compare the diagram with the diamond under magnification and with the report’s other identifying data. Even so, the diagram is a simplified two-dimensional view of a three-dimensional diamond. It supports identification, but it does not provide an exact fingerprint.
Read the plot with its Keys to Symbols and report comments holistically, not in isolation. As you will see in the Whiteflash guide to diamond inclusions, the first clarity feature listed under the key is the grade-setting inclusion, the feature with the greatest effect on the assigned clarity grade. Comments can add material the plot does not show, including further characteristics or an explanation of how the grade was determined. If clouds are noted but not plotted, examine the individual diamond more closely for transparency. A clean-looking plot is attractive to shoppers, but it is never the entire story.

Eligibility: The Important 1.99-Carat Boundary

Older explanations sometimes describe the Dossier as a report only for diamonds below 1.00 carat. That is no longer current.

GIA now lists the Diamond Dossier for loose, natural D-to-Z diamonds with untreated color from 0.15 to 1.99 carats. At 2.00 carats, a natural D-to-Z diamond is not eligible for the Dossier.
The full GIA Diamond Grading Report is available from 0.15 carats upward for loose natural D-to-Z diamonds. GIA also states that the full-report service can accept treated-color diamonds, while the Dossier applies to D-to-Z untreated color. Within the 0.15–1.99-carat range, either report may appear. The title on the document, not size alone, tells you which format was issued.

The Dossier is not a lower-standard assessment of color, clarity, cut, and carat weight. It is a streamlined format with a different identification mechanism. A full report does not automatically signal a higher-quality diamond either; it simply includes the clarity plot.

What Both Reports Still Tell You

Both formats provide the core information used to assess a diamond: carat weight, measurements, color and clarity grades, fluorescence, and finish information. For standard round brilliant diamonds, GIA also reports a cut grade. GIA Triple Excellent means that a standard round brilliant received Excellent for cut, polish, and symmetry. Those grades are useful, but they do not provide a complete analysis of optical performance.
Both reports include measurements and a proportions graphic. Table percentage, depth percentage, crown angle, pavilion angle, girdle information, and millimeter measurements describe the diamond’s physical proportions. Fluorescence appears on both report types. It is a reported characteristic, not an automatic positive or negative. Most fluorescent diamonds do not have a visual issue, although strong or very strong fluorescence can sometimes be associated with reduced transparency. What Neither Format Can Tell You by Itself

Without a clarity plot, a Dossier gives less context about inclusion type and location than a full report. That does not mean a full-report plot can establish whether the diamond is eye-clean. “Eye-clean” is not a laboratory grade. Visibility depends on the characteristic’s type, size, and position, plus the diamond’s shape, lighting, viewing angle, distance, and the observer’s vision. A full report can suggest where a potentially visible inclusion lies, while a Dossier cannot provide that visual map. Yet neither format shows the transparency of a cloud, the reflectivity of a crystal, the depth of a feather, or how a characteristic appears through the crown facets at normal viewing distance. Neither report directly measures every aspect of light performance or guarantees a particular face-up appearance.

A Practical Sequence for Reading Either Report

Start by confirming the record. Compare the number on the document with GIA Report Check, as outlined in the Whiteflash GIA diamond certification guide. With a Dossier, compare that number with the girdle inscription when suitable magnification is available. With a full report, use the plot, measurements, and visible characteristics together. An inscription on a full-report diamond adds another check.

Then read the grades and proportions in context. Color and clarity establish a starting point; measurements and proportions explain the diamond’s physical make-up. Check the report comments. “Clarity grade based on clouds that are not shown” does not automatically rule out a diamond, but it warrants closer attention to transparency. A clean diagram alone is not enough.
Then examine the individual diamond. Review the available imagery and video, and compare candidates on the same terms.
