Something Borrowed

The title of the 2011 romantic comedy Something Borrowed probably refers to both traditional wedding-day saying, or to the fact that the plot hinges on two best friends, Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Darcy (Kate Hudson), “borrowing” true love from each other in the form of the same man. But there is another kind of borrowing that is highly relevant to this movie, and that is wardrobe borrowing! With a wardrobe spanning everything from nerdy-but-cute college student to sexpot beach vacation, not to mention a wedding dress, this movie is overflowing with fantastic fashion inspiration. Whether you are more of a Rachel, with dark hair and a serious but sweet side, or a party-girl Darcy with long blond hair and a huge smile, you will want to raid the closet of every character in this movie! In fact, Something Borrowed is pretty much a guide to everything you need to wear during wedding season, whether you are the bride or a loyal bridesmaid (once again).

Professional gals of all ages will want to steal Rachel’s style. As played by doe-eyed Ginnifer Goodwin, Rachel is a lawyer with a heart of gold who almost lets her best friend marry the guy of her dreams. She wears professional but interesting wardrobe choices like a slim sheath dress with a crisp white button-down shirt, a cropped tan suit with a luxe tank, and a charcoal gray blazer over a minidress. Even on weekends, Rachel displays restrained elegance, with neutral tones and comfortable cardigans in soft materials.
Kate Hudson’s character, Darcy, is a take-charge party girl with the va-va-voom style to match. When dressed up, she favors slinky pencil skirts and daring dresses. Even in a casual setting, Darcy shows off her sexy curves in short shorts and oversize oxford shirts carelessly knotted at the waist. Her bouncy, curly blond hair is her character’s trademark, as is her wide smile and dark sunglasses. As a bride-to-be, she rocks white in almost every outfit, from her daringly deep-cut white satin dress for Rachel’s birthday party, to a weekend look of white high-waist pants. White is more fashionable than ever, and there is no better time than when you are a bride to get used to wearing this attention-grabbing color!
Something Borrowed visits all those iconic moments in a bride’s journey to the altar, showing off impeccable fashion for every one. Both bride and maid of honor rock classic Little Black Dresses for the bachelorette party, with the mandatory addition of a tiara and veil for the bride. The girls celebrate the all-important girls-night-in the week before the wedding in comfortable but fashionable cotton tees and sweatpants.
Of course, a wedding movie is not complete with a fabulous, covetable wedding dress. Kate Hudson is famous for choosing movie roles that allow her to play bridal dress-up, and Something Borrowed is no exception. Darcy chooses a dress as bold as her personality—a frothy strapless white confection with beading, a tulle frill across the bodice, and a full skirt—and pairs it with her character’s trademark sultry smoky eye makeup and deep plum lips. Yellow gold and diamond bridal jewelry completes the look-at-me ensemble.
Something Borrowed even has the honeymoon covered. The friends hang out on the beach in sexy, yet laid back, honeymoon-ready outfits. Darcy rocks a patterned bikini covered with a silky coverup, a bright silk scarf in her hair and sunglasses, while Rachel looks adorable in a cute floral sundress. Both carry the number one accessory for a perfect honeymoon look—an icy cocktail with a delicious garnish!
